(WMC) – A man from Memphis, Tennessee, died after doctors told him that he had contracted a flesh-eating bacteria while swimming on the Gulf Coast.

The man's daughter, Cheryl Wiygul, wrote in a Facebook post Wednesday that her father had fallen ill after returning home after a family trip to the beach in Destin, Florida.

Wiygul said his father contracted a red wound on his back, as well as red bumps on his arms and legs.

The man died later on July 7, just 48 hours after his last swim in Florida.

This is the second time in a month that visitors are returning home after a trip to the waters of Destin, Florida, with confirmed cases of flesh-eating bacteria.

In a statement, the Florida Department of Health said it was now investigating the cases and encouraging the public not to enter the water with fresh cuts or scrapes.

Wiygul said his father had no cuts or injuries, but that his immune system jeopardized by recent cancer treatments had probably exposed him to a higher risk.
