A man from Alabama arrested for throwing cigarettes at detainees on July 4

A man was arrested after authorities reported throwing cigarettes at a work team of detainees preparing flags on a road in Alabama on July 4th.

Michael Brown, 39, of Center, Alabama, was arrested Thursday in Cherokee County Jail for inciting smuggling in prison and impaired driving.

"He said," I know they can not have tobacco in the jail, but it's July 4th, "said Capt. Nick Vaughn of the Sherokee County Sheriff's Office, according to the Birmingham News. "Apparently, he thought it would be a good idea."

The inmates are responsible for raising American flags along Route 411 between Center and Leesburg to celebrate July 4th and other holidays.

Brown is accused of throwing cigarettes at the inmates while he passes them in his car, the newspaper reported.

Vaughn found him intoxicated after a traffic stop, according to the newspaper.

Cherokee County Sheriff Jeff Shaver said, "We are doing everything in our power to prevent smuggling from entering the prison. We do not need the public to throw it at them. "

Brown was released Friday after a night in jail for an online document issue, tied to a $ 1,000 bond.
