An officer from Athens-Clarke County killed a man after the authorities had declared that he had brandished a shotgun against the police while they were trying to talk to him.

Carlton Steve Brooks, 63, was shot dead after opening his door with the help of a shotgun, authorities said. Athens police called the GBI to investigate this incident.

Athens-Clarke police said the deadly police shootings occurred around 11:40 pm Saturday. Officers were sent to a house in Hull Road following a phone call, the ministry said in a statement.

The officers spoke to the victim, who identified a suspect, the department said. The police went to the suspect's home, which was also on Hull Road, police said.

According to the GBI, officers knocked on the Brooks' door and announced themselves. Before answering the door, one of the police saw a man with a gun inside, the GBI said. Officers moved away from the door and gave repeated orders to drop the weapon.

That's when Brooks opened the door, the gun in his hand.

"Brooks pointed his gun at one of the officers, who then fired twice," said the GBI. According to the police department, police officers administered first aid to this man and he was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. No officer was injured in the shooting.

The department stated that the officer in question had been placed on administrative leave with pay in accordance with departmental policy.

An autopsy will be held at GBI Crime Lab.

This is the 29th investigation into shootings involving officers on which the GBI was commissioned to conduct an investigation in 2019. The last investigation of this type was opened on April 15, following the prosecution by the police in Alabama near Fort Benning.
