A masked gunman was killed in a shootout with police who confronted him on a Brooklyn street and sued him in a back yard Monday morning, police said.
The shooting sparked dozens of shots in a Brownsville neighborhood court, police chief Terence Monahan said. No officer was injured.
The New York Police Department did not reveal the identity of the man who was shot repeatedly at the body, Monahan told reporters at a conference of press.
The meeting began when three uniformed officers on patrol in an unmarked car saw a masked man around Howard and Dumont Avenues around 2.30am.
"He had his face covered while walking down the street, which is rather suspicious on a hot night, so they went to stop him." He immediately ran, "said Monahan.
While one of the officers was getting out of the car and the others were circling around a corner, the man pulled out a gun and opened fire on the car, leaving a hole in the car. ball in the front door on the passenger side, said Monahan. He said that the officer on foot had fired back, but that the man had fled.
About half an hour later, a resident told police that someone was trying to break into a house on Howard Avenue. Uniformed officers entered the yard of the house and were shot. They fought back and were immobilized for some time before the reinforcements arrived, Monahan said.
A total of seven officers fired about 65 shells, the police chief said, adding that the police still had shell shells fired by the shooter. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said they found a semi-automatic handgun in the yard and filmed the confrontation.
