BOULDER COUNTY, Colorado – A man died and his wife is injured after being struck by lightning while she was walking on the Bear Peak Trail in Boulder County Sunday afternoon.

According to a statement from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, dispatchers received a 911 call from a hiker stating that two other hikers had been struck by lightning. He said that one of them, a 36-year-old man from Denver, was unconscious and was not breathing anymore, and that one passerby had started CPR. The second victim, the 37-year-old man's wife, was conscious and alert.

The sheriff's office said the rescue crews found the couple about a quarter of a kilometer upstream from Bear Creek Trail from the start of the trail, located in 2700 block of Bison Road. They took control of the control CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) on the man. They managed to restore the pulse of the man, but he died later in the hospital after being driven by helicopter.

The investigation revealed that the man had been struck directly by lightning, the statement said. His wife was not touched directly, but she was injured by the electric current and did not put her life in danger. She was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

The name of the man is withheld until other members of his family have been warned.
