A man reportedly tried to take an electronic cigarette in the plane and would have triggered a smoke detector in the bathroom

A passenger on a plane has discovered how electronic cigarettes can still trigger smoke detectors.

The man would have triggered the smoke detector on a Spirit Airlines flight while trying to use his electronic cigarette in the bathroom of the aircraft. He would have been surprised trying to use the device in the main cabin a few moments before.

The incident occurred on a Detroit flight to New Orleans, Fox said 12. According to a flight assistant, the passenger reportedly used the electronic cigarette in his seat and reportedly tried to breathe in a bag. She confronted the man and told him that he was not allowed to use the aircraft in the plane.

Moments later, he reportedly got up and entered the bathroom of the plane. While still in the bathroom, the smoke detector on the plane activated.

Electronic cigarettes and other similar devices are unlikely to trigger a smoke alarm, but can activate one if the steam is blown into it, especially in a small enclosed space such as an airplane bathroom.

The pilot was forced down to 35,000 feet to turn off the alarm, reports NOLA.com. When the plane landed at Louis Armstrong International Airport, an assistant sheriff was waiting for him. According to him, the passenger smelled of alcohol and seemed to be intoxicated. Another passenger on the flight claimed that the man had taken drinks in "several bottles of alcohol" that he "was hiding under his jacket".

The passenger was not stopped when the plane landed, reported FOX 12. He allegedly denied having smoked in the bathroom and claimed that he was unaware that it was not allowed in airplanes. Spirit Airlines apparently had a harsher reaction, however, and banned it from the airline for life.
