A man from Geyserville went on a closed stretch of Highway 101, led the authorities to a pursuit of over 100 mph, and then refused to leave his car on Sunday morning, causing a closure of the lane. highway for several hours, just north of Santa Rosa, announced the CHP.
The man, later identified by law enforcement as Eric Van Gelder, 56, was driving a white Honda Civic when he bypassed at 6:22 am a closed cogeneration road near of Geyserville, set up to help PG & E teams working in the area, cogeneration office David deRutte said.
The CHP officers and Sonoma County Sheriff's deputies followed the man as he headed south, deRutte said. MPs deployed a nailed track near Windsor and the car was stationed north of Santa Rosa, deRutte explained.
Gelder refusing to get out of the car, officials decided to close Highway 101 between River Road and Airport Boulevard back and forth for a few hours.
At first, the authorities did not know if Gelder was the only occupant of the car. The sheriff's office set up his hostage team and tried to contact him for nearly two hours, said Lt. Tim Duke.
"The person did not cooperate and was incoherent at the limit," said Duke.
After identifying the man, MPs contacted his relatives and got his cell phone number. But calls to Gelder resulted in no response or a response followed by a suspension, Duke said. On one occasion, Gelder picked up the phone but spoke little and sometimes sang music in the car.
Once the sheriff's SWAT team determined that Gelder was alone inside the Honda, they attempted to incapacitate him with the help of gasoline and gasoline. A sounding grenade before the police forces him out of the car, said Duke. The man was reportedly not seriously injured, but was hospitalized, in part because deputy ministers found drugs and drug accessories inside the vehicle, Duke said.
Gelder was arrested for avoiding the police, driving under the influence and resisted arrest.
Highway 101 reopened at 10 am, according to the CHP.
