BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) – An Alabama man sentenced to life imprisonment for stealing US $ 50.75 will be given a short prison sentence after being sentenced to serve the sentence.
According to media reports, Alvin Kennard, 58, was sentenced to prison release Wednesday after 36 years, and should be treated by the Alabama Corrections Department. It's unclear when Kennard will be released.
Court records indicate that Kennard was sentenced to death in 1983 under the Alabama Traditional Crime Offenders Act for stealing from a bakery. Kennard had previously been charged with burglary and robbery, making him eligible for a conviction under the law.
Kennard's lawyer, Carla Crowder, said he would have been sentenced to a maximum of 20 years under the new sentencing guidelines.
Kennard says that he will live with his family in Bessemer and work in the carpentry.
