PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida – A worker in a group home in Pinellas County is charged with allowing a 35-year-old man with Down syndrome to die in a van.
On May 9, the Carrefour de Pinellas worker – identified as Joshua Russell, age 26 – occupied the man with Down syndrome and took him back to the group home after a visit to the house. # 39; s hospital. Back from the hospital, Russell decided to make a stop at his home and left John Lapointe, 35, inside the van.
At home, Russell consumed kratom. Russell told MPs that he had taken the stuff to feel "more alert".
After taking the kratom, Russell jumped into the van and resumed his journey. On the way back, Russell started to feel tired and nauseated. He then parked the van in the driveway, stopped the vehicle and took a nap.
Russell woke up later, sweated by the heat of the van and noticed that Lapointe was not breathing anymore.
Russell tried CP but could not revive Lapointe, said Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri.
Russell, who was armed, called his mother and told him that he was going to kill himself after realizing what he had just done. His mother told Russell that he should not kill himself.
His mother called 911 and the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office responded to their address on 82nd Avenue near Oaskhurst Road in Seminole.
When MPs arrived at the scene, paramedics had already declared Lapointe dead and Russell had left the area on foot and was armed. When MPs located Russell, the 26-year-old told them he was going to kill himself.
Finally, the deputy ministers were able to detain Russell. Sheriff Gualtieri said the internal temperature of the van at the time of Lapointe 's death was about 125 degrees.
"You know that poor guy cooked in this car, that's what happened," said Gualtieri.
Russell is accused of intentional homicide of a handicapped adult.
