A measles epidemic is spreading in Washtenaw County; 41 confirmed cases

(WWJ) Michigan health officials have confirmed two new cases of measles, bringing to 41 the total number of states for the current year.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced Monday that newly confirmed cases were in Oakland and Washtenaw counties, bringing the number of cases to 39 in the county of Oakland. Oakland, one in Washtenaw County and one in Wayne County.

Infected individuals are 8 months to 63 years old.

MDHHS is working closely with the Oakland County Health Division and the Washtenaw County Health Department to identify possible exposure sites for these cases.

Dozens of shops, schools, and other public buildings have been identified as exhibits, which means that anyone who came to the scene on or around a date could have been infected. A complete listing of Oakland County's known exhibition sites can be found at Oakgov.com/health.

Authorities have indicated that the exhibition venues are not yet available for the Washtenaw County case. They will be provided once available on washtenaw.org/health. There are no public exhibition venues for the Wayne County case.

The measles vaccine is very effective and very safe, according to health officials. A single dose of measles vaccine protects approximately 95% of children; but after two doses, almost 100% are immunized.
