A Michigan woman has been pronounced dead by paramedics. The funeral home discovered she was alive.

Paramedics declared the death of a Michigan woman before her body was taken to a funeral home – where staff found she was alive and well, authorities said Monday.

The bizarre incident unfolded in Southfield on Sunday morning, when local paramedics rushed to rescue a callous 20-year-old woman, officials said.

Paramedics believed the woman was dead and called a nearby hospital to share vital signs with an emergency room doctor, who used the data to officially report the death, said the spokesperson for the County Medical Examiner. Oakland, Bill Mullan.

First responders then called the medical examiner to share the same information, leading a medical examiner to rule that there was nothing suspicious or possibly criminal, thus allowing his body to be sent to a funeral home.

“In this case, there was a medical history that said (the involvement of the medical examiner) was not necessary,” Mullan told NBC News on Monday.

Citing issues of medical confidentiality, Mullan declined to reveal the woman’s medical history which helped paramedics believe she was dead.

The woman’s body was taken to the James H. Cole Home for Funerals in Detroit, where workers saw the allegedly deceased woman move.

“You could tell she was breathing,” Cole spokeswoman Jocelyn Allen said. “You can see a chest going up and down. They could see that.

The woman was taken to Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit, where she was still being treated on Monday.

Southfield fire officials were still piecing together what happened on Sunday.

“How did it happen? Everyone wants to know, ”said Southfield Fire Battalion Chief Chris Smith.

Mullan refused to question his agency’s paramedics, emergency room doctor or medical examiner in making the incorrect conclusion of death.

“I don’t have enough facts to make this call,” Mullan said, while adding, “I would consider this a rare circumstance.”
