Spring is in full bloom and residents of Metro Vancouver will have the opportunity to witness a magnificent moon of strawberries to celebrate the season.

The full moon of June is also known as the "strawberry moon". It will reach its maximum on June 17th.

According to Alamanac of the Old Farmer, the June moon gets its name from "Algonquin tribes who knew it as a signal to harvest the ripe fruit of the wild strawberry".

They point out that Aboriginal peoples would assign distinct names to each full moon that repeats itself to mark the change of season. As such, many of these names were created during the first interaction between Native Americans and colonialists.

The full moon of June is also known as Honey Moon, Mead Moon and Full Rose Moon in Europe.

Astronomers should choose to travel as far as possible from city lights in order to avoid light pollution that obscures the clarity of celestial bodies. Although it works best in more remote locations, higher elevation locations also provide more ideal viewing conditions.
