Fowler and his wife began searching their wooded and secluded property near Chimney Rock in the mountains of western North Carolina.
He was unaware that the forces of order were furiously looking for a baby, allegedly abducted in Asheville, about 25 kilometers away.
Fowler, a heavy equipment operator, and his wife walked and listened until he saw the baby and a car seat at the bottom of a 75-foot ravine near his driveway, he said.
"So I went there and I got it," he told the baby. "We did check it and in a few minutes, it calmed down, as if it was in his mom's arms."
The baby, identified as 7-week-old Shaylie Madden, was taken to the hospital and is fine, said Henderson County Sheriff Lowell Griffin.
Attempt to kill
At a press conference held on Friday, Griffin told investigators that the 35-year-old mother of the child, Krista Madden, had thrown the car seat into the ravine. When the seat hit the ground, Shaylie was apparently deployed.
Madden was charged with attempted first degree murder. She holds a bond of $ 750,000 and is expected to have a probable cause hearing on May 28.
Griffin did not provide any alleged motive, claiming that the investigation had just begun. He did not say Madden had confessed, but he added, "She has provided enough information about her involvement to give us a probable cause".
CNN asked Madden's lawyer to comment.
The authorities started looking for Shaylie when the Asheville police received a 911 call around 4:30 pm. Thursday about a possible kidnapping of the baby and Krista Madden from their home in Asheville.
A silver 2014 Mazda may have been used, officials said. The police in Asheville did not identify the appellant, but stated that it was not Madden.
During the course of their investigation, the police were able to ring Madden's mobile phone in an area of Henderson County. Around 5:40 pm, someone called Henderson County Line 911 to report finding an abandoned Mazda money on a gravel road in the country, Griffin said.
Then Henderson County Sheriff's deputies found Madden walking on a country road, not far from where the car had been abandoned and a few miles from Fowler's home. The car was later identified as Madden's, Griffin said.
Madden explained to police that she was able to escape her captors, described as a man and a woman wearing a ski mask, but that they still had her 7-week-old daughter, Shaylie, Griffin said. The baby was wearing a pink bodysuit with horizontal white stripes.
MPs and two locating dogs searched the area near the car and found nothing, Griffin said.
While the officers were interviewing Madden, a 911 call was placed at the Henderson County Sheriff's office around 8 pm
It was Fowler, saying that he had just found a baby at the bottom of a ravine.
It seems Madden acted alone, said the sheriff. As for his story about the kidnappers, it seems like a hoax, he said, adding, "We do not think that's factual at all."
"It was just there for me to find & # 39;
Many questions remain unanswered but everyone agrees that it is a miracle that Shaylie was found.
"It's just, in my opinion, by the grace of a merciful God that we have had a woman who will check her mailbox," Griffin said. "She sincerely believes that she hears the faint cries of a child. He calls her husband, who is an independent contractor. It arrives in the area and descends into a ravine over 75 feet to find him alone. with a car seat, the bank. "
Fowler said that he was in agreement with the sheriff.
Standing near his house and gesturing for the mountains around his home, Fowler said, "No matter where else in these mountains … and that may have never been found," he said. he told WLOS.
"It was amazing, it was just there for me to find."
