A woman and her 10-year-old daughter were found dead and a man is in critical condition Saturday following police investigations into an attempted double murder-suicide in the Bronx.
A child rang the alarm by calling a parent to tell him that the 10-year-old was not breathing, police sources said.
The parent asked the police to check the family's apartment located on the third floor of Belmont Avenue, near East 181st Street.
The cops arrived around 1:30 pm to find two other girls of the woman, aged 15 and 17, waiting for them outside.
His 13-year-old son was with his sister's lifeless body, police said.
The body of her mother, aged 34, was found in another bedroom, where the 32-year-old man was shot in the head, police said. .
When the police entered the bedroom, they saw the man with the gun in his hand, urging them to temporarily withdraw before entering the room, police said.
Mother and daughter may have been strangled to death, sources said. They were declared dead on the scene. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.
The man was rushed to St. Barnabas hospital with a gunshot wound to the head, apparently self-inflicted to the head, authorities said.
"There is a guy with a gun," police said to a neighbor as they were moving people from the area.
"The cops came running and told me to come in, get in," he said.
Another child from the house was seen crying for her mother, said teenage neighbor Tiana Barios.
"She cried hysterically, saying," Mom, Mom, Mom, "and shouted loudly," said Barios, 13. "The little girl asked for water. We brought him water and tried to calm them down.
It was not immediately clear whether the man was the father of the children, but the police said he seemed to have had a relationship with his mother.
"They had him on a stretcher with handcuffs and he had blood everywhere," Barios continued. "He had a hole in his head."
"They were moving fast. There was no trace of his conversation. There was no breathing, there was no movement. He was stiff.
