Goetz said that the gunman, identified Monday by the police as Jacob Munn, had first escaped but had been arrested at Hawthorne later in the night as a result of a hunt. Man, reported KTLA.
The son of the 17-month-old couple was present at the shooting but was not physically injured. He would have been inside the police station at that time.
"I have been working in the department for 30 years and have never seen anything like it before," said Lt. Scott Hoaglund at a press conference on Sunday, according to KCAL. "Typically, a police station is a safe place to allow people to do a child exchange and I would still recommend that people do it."
A week before the tragedy, Munn posted on his Facebook page a picture of his son and wrote in the caption: "No matter what I will never give up … # RoyalMunnFamily # Family1st #NothinbutLOVE."
On the day of the murder, he released an encrypted update containing a single word: ".SOLID".
According to the investigators, Renteria went to the police station on Hawthorne Boulevard to pick up her son at her father's house.
The mother had asked her family to accompany her to the exchange because she feared Munn, KCAL reported.

Standing in front of the police headquarters lobby, the parents started arguing.
At one point during the exchange, Munn allegedly made a firearm and shot at Renteria, killing her just steps from the police station door.
He then jumped into his black Chevrolet pickup truck and sped at full speed, police said.
The vehicle, with a small cross hanging on the mirror, was later found abandoned in the parking lot of Denny, one kilometer south of the police station, but the suspect was not found.

Jacob Munn was found Sunday at 9 pm, not far from where his van was.
It took police about three hours to find Munn, who was detained in block 4400 on 134th Street in Hawthorne, not far from where his truck was found, around 9:15 pm.
He is being held at the Los Angeles County Jail on a $ 2 million bail.
Munn has a criminal record that included an arrest in December 2017 under the battery charge on an old mate
A family member of the deceased mother told NBC Los Angeles that she and her father had decided to meet at Hawthorne because it was a compromise between their respective homes.
"I do not know if there was a restraining order in place or it was simply an agreed place to allow them to proceed with the exchange," he said. Lt. Scott Hoglund, Los Angeles County Sheriff, told the press Sunday. "I do not know if there were any court documents involved in this case.
Online records indicate that Munn has an earlier criminal record that included an arrest in December 2017 under the battery charge for a former mate.
DailyMail.com can now reveal that Munn is the owner of a registered moving company in Temecula, California called Lionspaw Movers.
His company's website says Munn has been working in the field of mobility for eight years.
