The New Jersey man 's phone has been inundated with text messages and calls from sympathizers since his sons bought him a billboard near Atlantic City.
The sign reads "Wish a happy birthday to my dad" and includes the photo and phone number of Ferry.
The billboard is mounted on March 6 and Ferry has already received more than 15,000 messages from around the world wishing him a happy 62nd birthday – even though the day only ends on March 16th.
Shortly after commissioning the billboard, Ferry received an SMS from the happy birthday of a stranger named Nick. When Ferry thanked him and asked him how they knew each other, Nick said that he had seen a driving display panel.
"(My father) immediately went to the sign and took a picture with him," said Ferry's son, also called Chris.
Continue a tradition of humor
Ferry's two sons, Michael and Chris, were perplexed about their father's fate for his birthday this year.
When they were young, they were telling restaurant waiters that it was their father's birthday that was pulling his leg and maybe getting a free dessert, said the youngest Chris Ferry.
So they decided to continue to honor his father in a fun way. The young Chris Ferry had recently bought a billboard in Atlantic City for his drug treatment center, and he was inspired to get one for his father.
"I called my brother (Michael) and told him," What if we put my father's picture on the sign and told him to wish him a happy birthday? " "The joker in me is out," said Chris Ferry. "My brother said that he loved it – he was dying to laugh."
He added: "It's big or come home."
The two sons never expected so many people to get close to their father.
"We thought the locals and his friends would call him, which would be a funny memory," said younger Chris Ferry. "We did not know it was going to be like that."
