A New Jersey police officer arrested after suffering a heroin overdose in his patrol car while he was working at midnight concluded a plea agreement that will cost him his job, according to the information.

Prosecutors said the Franklin Township police officer, Matthew Ellery, was to be resuscitated by a colleague who found him unconscious and gave him an antidote commonly called Narcan, the Newark Star-Ledger reported.

Ellery, 29, was charged with possession of heroin and drunk driving after the April 7 incident. He pleaded guilty Friday in Somerset County Superior Court.

In exchange, Ellery agreed to enroll in an addiction treatment program and lose his job, according to TapInto Franklin, an information website. He added that he could avoid jail time when he finishes the program.

The police officer who found Ellery had been sent to the officer's last location after a dispatcher tried to reach Ellery on the radio and could not, says the website.

"Matt Ellery is a terrific young man who has a problem and we are trying to do what is necessary to solve it, he moves on to something else," said Steven Altman's defense attorney at Star-Ledger.

The newspaper reported that after the announcement of Ellery's arrest last month, the two largest police officers of the Franklin Township Police Department announced abruptly their departure to the retirement.
