KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) – Patients express their concerns after state health officials have warned that some might need to be tested.

The Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Department has filed a complaint against Dr. Roger Beyer on May 21st. Beyer owns women's health experts and Beyer Research.

The complaint alleges that his office repeatedly used anorectal pressure gauges that were cleaned inconsistently between patients.

Lissa Edminister says that she has been treated by Beyer for several years and that she has been involved in several studies on migraines and incontinence.

"I was completely shocked and horrified," Edminister said. "Although I did not use the anal probe, there were questions about the specula and to research, I was examined twice with a speculum. One wonders if this speculum was clean?

According to Edminister, the office always seemed clean.

Beyer told Tuesday at 24:00 News that the allegations are a misunderstanding and will be cleared up with the state.

"We called the Food and Drug Administration and said that what we were doing was appropriate," said Beyer.

Beyer denies that patients were treated with unclean equipment.

"They have been disinfected. They were better disinfected than what the (regulation) required, "said Beyer.

Penny Born, from the Department of Health and Community Services of Kalamazoo County, says they're helping troubled patients.

"We are starting to receive calls from some patients," Born said. "They have some questions and we are able to answer a lot of these questions."

The service provides free tests to patients or anyone who thinks they have been exposed to body fluids.

"The risk of transmission by any type of device is very minimal and highly improbable," said Born.

Health officials encourage all patients operated by Beyer or his staff to undergo blood tests for HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Department of Health and Community Services of Kalamazoo County says he's offering the three tests during the following clinic hours:

  • Monday, Tuesday *, Wednesday and Friday (except public holidays): from 8:00 to 12:00, from 13:00 to 13:00. – 15:30
  • Thursday: 10:00 – 13:00, 14:00 – 17:40
  • Third Tuesday of the month: 13h – 15h30.

Beyer could lose his license if he does not show compliance to the state supervisory authorities.
