A Illinois police officer was dragged by a vehicle on Sunday as he was trying to interrogate people leaving an accident on the Dan Ryan Highway in Pilsen, in the southern part of the city. .
Authorities were summoned at approximately 5:15 am for information that a man and a woman would be moving away from an accident involving a single vehicle on I-94 heading south, into the 18th street, according to a police statement from the state of Illinois.
A soldier sighted the two men near 18th Avenue and Union Avenue and began talking to them when one parent arrived in another vehicle, state police said. The man interviewed by the soldier then drove to the family member's car and drove away.
The soldier attempted to stop the car and was dragged for about half a block while standing behind the wheel, said state police.
The soldier fell on the sidewalk and the vehicle continued to roll and crashed on 18 and Halsted streets, state police said. The driver came out and escaped. The woman and the parent remained on the scene with the police near the 18th and Union.
The soldier was taken to a hospital with injuries that did not put his life in danger, the state police said.
The incident is still under investigation by the state police.
Another police officer was forced to hang onto the sunroof of a fugitive vehicle last week on the Eisenhower Expressway. Private Brian Spillane was treated and discharged from hospital for his injury following the encounter.
The driver, Steven Carlson Gouveia, 31, was charged with attempted first degree murder of a police officer.
Three soldiers were killed and at least 16 people were struck by vehicles this year.
