Authorities in New Jersey said that another police officer had been found unconscious in his own patrol car earlier this year as a result of a drug overdose.

According to Fox News, Matthew Ellery, a 29-year-old Franklin Township officer, was reportedly arrested for impaired driving and heroin possession after a colleague found him on April 7. The other officer reportedly used a narcotic antidote to revive him. .

Reports show that Ellery's colleague became anxious and went after him after trying to reach him on the radio without any response.

Subsequent court records indicate that Ellery appeared in Somerset County Superior Court on Friday when he pleaded guilty to the charges against him.

As part of an advocacy agreement with prosecutors, he could avoid the penalty of imprisonment by successfully completing a drug rehabilitation program. Whatever the case may be, this incident will cost him his job in the Franklin Township Police Department.

Ellery's defense attorney said the former police officer was eager to leave this chapter of his life behind him.

"Matt Ellery is a wonderful young man who has a problem and we are trying to do what is necessary to solve it, he solves his problems and moves on," said Steven Altman.
