Add “A Quiet Place Part II” to the growing list of 2021 films that have already been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Paramount’s post-apocalyptic thriller – directed by John Krasinski and starring Emily Blunt – has been postponed for the third time. It will now open in theaters on September 17th.
“A Quiet Place 2” was originally slated for release last March, but those plans were scrapped at the 11th hour when the health crisis began to take hold of the United States. It was recently moved to April 23, but that date has recently started to look unlikely given that coronavirus cases are still on the rise.
With the surge in COVID-19 infections, films have been slow to return to the United States. This means that studios still don’t feel comfortable releasing their most animated movies to the big screen. Currently in North America, about 65% of movie theaters remain closed, and theaters that have remained open have struggled to sell tickets.
Paramount has been an active seller for the past year, siphoning the likes of “The Trial of the Chicago 7” by Aaron Sorkin, “Coming 2 America” with Eddie Murphy and “Without Remorse” at Netflix and Amazon. Still, the studio remains confident about the commercial prospects of “A Quiet Place 2” and plans to keep it exclusively in theaters. The original 2018 film became a hit for Paramount, earning $ 340 million worldwide on a budget of $ 17 million.
As the pandemic reaches its tenth month, Hollywood studios have started to postpone another batch of successful hopes. The delay for a “Quiet Place 2” comes a day after MGM pushed “No Time to Die,” the latest James Bond sequel, from early April through October. Moments after Bond blinked, Sony Pictures changed its plans to release a number of films, including “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, “Morbius” by Jared Leto and “Cinderella” starring Camila Cabello. And earlier on Friday, Disney moved “The King’s Man” from March to the end of August.
As it stands, the next big budget movies on the calendar are Disney’s “Black Widow” (May 7) and Universal’s “Fast & Furious” “F9” (May 28).
