Narcan was administered to a school bus driver carrying 12 children in New Jersey after hitting the bus in a tree on Wednesday.

Lisa Byrd, 57, of Newark, is facing 12 counts of endangering a child's welfare, impaired driving and possession of equipment for related consumption to the incident.

The Newark Department of Public Safety said that Byrd, a school bus driver, crashed into a tree along 14th Avenue and Jones Street. In case of emergency, Narcan was administered to Byrd at the scene.

"I am pleased that members of the Newark Police and Fire Divisions and EMS responded quickly and felt that all the children were safe and unharmed," said Ambrose, director of the Newark Public Security Department. "Driving while impaired is dangerous enough, but adding children to the situation is particularly irresponsible and obnoxious."

Byrd is a school bus operator at F & A Transport in East Orange and was taken to the University Hospital for treatment.

The bus children, aged 5 to 13, were not injured.
