A sealed capsule 50 years ago was recently opened to reveal what was inside – absolutely nothing

In fact, they are all wrong: the capsule was empty.

For years, the unopened safe sat on a dusty shelf in a Derry library. In honor of its 50th anniversary, the director of the library, Cara Potter, decided to find out what it contained before it was unveiled to the public, CNN's affiliate said, WMUR.

Flanked by a host of local historians and municipal officials, Potter opened the capsule. It took several tries to release the old door, but once that was done, the group was disappointed by what they did – or rather, did not find.

"We were a little horrified to find that there was nothing in it," Potter said.

The capsule was to be unveiled Saturday at the Old Home Day celebration in Londonderry. City Manager Kevin Smith announced the news to a disappointed audience.

"It turns out we have our own little forum," Smith said, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader.

Historian Derry Paul Lindemann told the newspaper that there was no list of its content, but that the safe included "a reel of film showing a tour of the city."

Could anyone have broken the combination lock and stolen the goods? Perhaps. But it is also possible that there was never anything at all.

Potter assumed that it could have included memories of Alan Shepard, a native of Derry and the first American astronaut to travel in space. But for the moment, the content – if there was one – of the 1969 time capsule will be lost in time.

"We will not know what happened to them," she said.
