A shot in the synagogue in California according to a rabbi indicates that the shooter's weapon was stuck or would have been a "bloodbath"

The rabbi who was shot in a synagogue in southern California on the last day of Pesach, said Sunday that it was nothing short of a miracle that the semi-automatic rifle of the shooter blocked and prevented what would have been a "bloodbath".

Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein appeared under a bandage at a press conference held in front of Chabad of Poway on Sunday. He lost his forefinger after being hit by a shootout that left one dead and three injured. Two faithful, Almog Peretz, 34, and Noya Dahan, 8, were injured by shrapnel.

He said he looked up Saturday and saw a young man wearing sunglasses stand in front of him with a rifle. He said that he had raised his hands and had been shot. He says he's lost his index finger. And then, Goldstein said, "miraculously the gun got stuck."

There was a room nearby that was full of people and children.

"It could have been a bloodbath," he said. "I do not want to think about it."

John T. Earnest, age 19, was arrested after the attack on the attack that is expected to take place this week, for murder and attempted murder.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Goldstein had recently asked a border patrol officer to come to the temple while being armed, which apparently paid off. The officer chased the suspect and shot while he was moving away quickly.

60-year-old Lori Gilbert-Kaye died of injuries in shooting near San Diego. It is thought that Gilbert-Kaye was thrown in front of Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, perhaps saving him life. One of the Los Angeles Times witnesses that Kaye's husband started CPR on a wounded person and was defeated when he realized he was his wife.

An online manifesto written by a person identifying as Earnest indicates that he was inspired by mass shooting in two New Zealand mosques that killed 50 Muslims last month.
