State officials in Oregon identified the victim as Michelle Casey, 21 years old. She was seriously injured when she slipped and fell while she was taking pictures at Neahkahnie Mountain, according to CNN affiliate, KPTV.

Michelle Casey was a junior at Oregon State, where she specialized in kinesiology.

Casey's boyfriend told MPs that she had landed in a tree, which prevented her from falling into the Pacific Ocean, the sheriff's office announced Monday in a press release.

"Assistance was requested from Cannon Beach for a rope rescue and they sent a High Angle rescue team that arrived around 10:51," the statement said.

First responders told KPTV that extrication and rescue were difficult and that the rope crew took two hours to join. Casey was flown to a Portland hospital where she died from injuries sustained in the fall, according to KPTV.

In a statement to KOIN, a CNN member, Casey's family said she had chosen to be an organ donor, a decision that would have saved two lives.

"Michelle has always brought people together with her bubbly personality and loving, generous heart," said her family. "She loved being outdoors and was at the beach – her favorite place – on Sundays."

Casey was a junior at the Oregon State's main campus in Corvallis. She specializes in kinesiology, according to Steve Clark, vice president of university relations and marketing for the state of Oregon.

"As a university community, we mourn the loss of a member of the community – and certainly from such a young age," Clark told CNN in an email.

The university provides assistance and counseling services to students, faculty, and staff, and has made contact with Casey's family members, Clark explains.

"Michelle Casey was born in joy on Christmas Eve 1997," said her family in a statement. "From that moment she was a gift for her family."
