A man in New York City suspected of committing a violent attack on a homeless woman on the subway was arrested after the video of the incident provoked outrage.

Marc Gomez, 36, faces charges of assault and harassment, according to reports.

Authorities say Gomez repeatedly hit a 78-year-old woman sitting alone on a train early in the morning of March 10 in the Bronx. The video can be seen in the video, holding his arm in the air to block the punches and kicks directed at him.

Gomez would have left the subway car while the passengers continued to film it.

A passerby reported a police officer from New York City at the next stop. The woman was treated for bleeding and swelling, but refused any other medical care. The cause of the attack was not clear.

A video of the incident drew over 12 million views online at the end of Saturday. The images provoked an uproar, directed not only against the attack, but also against the witnesses filming on their mobile phone who shouted instead of intervening.

Gomez was waiting for his indictment on Saturday night.

Associated Press contributed to this report.
