ORANGE, California – Dozens of law enforcement officials on Friday hunted a 15-year-old boy in the midst of a murder trial in which his mother was murdered while escaping from a prison in Nairobi. Southern California.
Ike Souzer escaped Orange County Juvenile Hall and broke through a perimeter barrier just after midnight, said sheriff captain Mike Peters.
The 200-meter-tall young man wore red pants and a white shirt and could have an injured leg, Peters added, adding that the surveillance footage showed that Souzer was tending to an apparent injury after his escape.
Peters said that about sixty law enforcement officers were looking for Souzer. He said there was no evidence that Souzer was armed but urged the public to call 911 when he thought he had spotted.
Souzer has been in police custody since the age of 13. He was arrested while he was suspected of having stabbed his mother, Barbra Scheuer-Souzer, 48, deadly. His escape took place in the middle of Souzer's trial, said Kimberly Edds, spokesman for the prosecutor's office.
Steve Sentman, probation officer for the county, refused to divulge too much details about the escape, citing security reasons, but said that Souzer had come out of a locked room before he could cross the perimeter fence of the prison.
He said that it was the first escape from the installation of 434 beds for at least two decades and that an investigation was ongoing on how that had happened.

Scheuer-Souzer had three other children and three grandchildren.
