Aged 15 at the time of the murder, Borges will serve two sentences of life imprisonment simultaneously. He will be eligible for parole after 30 years.

Hayden did not immediately respond to CNN's request to make further comments after the conviction.

Lee Manuel Villoria-Paulino's mother cried while addressing the judge when Mathew Borges was sentenced on Tuesday.

Paulino's body was discovered on the banks of the Merrimack River in December 2016. He was beheaded and his hands were lost.

During the trial, the prosecution claimed that Borges was jealous because Paulino had spent time with his girlfriend. Prosecutors said Borges distracted Paulino from home while other teens stole and killed him.

WCVB, affiliated with CNN, reported that forensic doctors found 76 injuries on Paulino's body and were unable to determine whether any injuries, including his beheading, occurred before or after his death.
