Brendan Bialy, the future Marine aspirant who took part in the action during the shooting at a Colorado school, said he had desperately pumped the chest of his deceased friend after being attacked to one of the attackers.
Despite his efforts, Kendrick Castillo, 18, died after throwing himself on the shooter of the STEM Highlands School Ranch Tuesday.
Another heroic student, Joshua Jones, was shot in the fight and recovered at home.
Bialy, 18, said Wednesday at a busy press conference that he had felt an "absolute fear" – but then rushed to help his two comrades master the shooter in their grade 12 English class, according to The Denver Post.
"I do not like the idea of running and hiding," he said. "Kendrick Castillo died of a legend. He died as a rider. He got his ticket to Valhalla and I know that he will be with me for the rest of my life. "
Castillo reacted without hesitation, throwing himself in front of the shooter "like a bowling ball," he said.
"The shooter was there, then against the wall and he did not know what the hell had hit him," said Bialy, who managed to dislodge the shooter's gun after he managed some fire.
Bialy said that he personally knew the attacker, but declined to determine which of the two suspects the STEM school was shooting at.
The young man, who joined the Marine Corps' delayed entry program, has to show up for a training this summer.
"At the end of the day, the reason I joined the team is to help people," he said. "And I'm going to do that."
But he said that he felt uncomfortable to be called a hero and attributed his bravery to his parents, who were sitting by his side.
"It must be genetics," he joked, adding that he was grateful for being unscathed from this ordeal.
"I have been blessed with something," he said. "Someone is watching me."
Bialy said he appreciated the support he received on social media, as well as messages from members of the US Marine, Army, Navy and Air Force, thanking him for his services.
"But every time I hear something like that, I have to let them know that Kendrick Castillo and the other student were rolling on the floor, where I was," he said. said Bialy.
He again reminded reporters of Castillo's sacrifice.
"Kendrick was a real nerd," Bialy said with a smile. "He was a fantastic and healthy person."
He repeated his Instagram motto, "I refuse to be a victim."
"Why in the world would I let this coward get what he wants? I am not a victim, "he said. "I refuse to be a victim. Kendrick refused to be a victim.
