MILLINGTON, TN (WMC) – A man faces charges after an 8 year old accidentally shot his mother at a baseball game Tuesday night.

The shooting occurred at Millington's US baseball stadium.

Charles McFarland, 76, faces unthinking accusations of endangerment.

Police said the child had found the gun inside the Jeep from World War II McFarland, who was at the match as part of 39, a Veterans Recognition Day.

Officers said that the gun was not secure and that the kid picked it up, thinking it was a toy.

His mother was hit by the shot and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The Millington police stated that McFarland was allowed to carry the weapon, but that he had not taken the proper precautions.

"Secure your weapon if you have one," said Millington Police Chief Mark Dunbar. "Everyone has the right to wear if you get a port license, but you have to use common sense and secure your weapons.

The University of Memphis and Tennessee-Martin were scheduled to play the annual Babe Howard Classic, but the match was canceled after the shooting.
