A Texan couple was arrested and charged after their three-year-old daughter's body was found in an acid-containing container in a closet in the room, police said.

Monica Dominguez, 37, and Gerardo Zavala Loredo, 32, were arrested in connection with the death of their daughter Rebecca Zavala, whose body parts were found breaking down in a five-gallon container that appeared to be filled d & # 39; acid.

The couple is accused of falsifying evidence, endangering a child and abusing a corpse, the police said at a press conference.

Police opened an investigation into the couple's home in Laredo on Thursday after receiving a tip from a neighbor, reported KGNS. The authorities obtained a warrant and began searching the house around 5 pm and discovered the container in a closet of the bedroom.

Dominguez said the 3-year-old girl was drowning in the bathtub while she was alone in the bathroom. She then reportedly recruited Zavala-Loredo's help to get rid of the body, the police said.

Police announced that she would examine the child's remains to determine if she had been injured before her death.

"We will now rely on forensic evidence … to examine the remains of the body to determine if there are injuries consistent with possible murder," police said at a conference press release Friday.

The other four children of the couple, ages 1 to 11, were referred to child protection services.

Martinez, detained on bail of $ 175,000, had previously been charged with causing injury to a child. Zavala Loredo, who is reportedly illegally in the United States, is being held on bail of $ 125,000.
