A cleric from South Carolina was shot dead at a church service on Sunday by a man who entered the building and asked for money, investigators said.

Henry Alfaro, pastor of Columbia's Centro Cristiano Church, said people were kneeling praying in the dimly lit Church of Acres Forest around 6:15 pm when an armed man from a firearm entered, fired in the air and shot a church member before fleeing.

His weapon apparently stopped working after shooting down the parishioner, Alfaro told WLTX-TV in Colombia.

A man suspected of shooting on a faithful Sunday drove away, police said.

It was not clear right away how many people were inside the church at the time.

The media identified the injured as Esvin Perez, 23 years old. He was operated on and stayed at the hospital.
