A tire kills a worker at John Wayne Airport – Orange County

SANTA ANA – A worker was killed Tuesday night when a big tire for a bridge connecting the terminal to jets exploded during repairs at John Wayne Airport.

Two men were working on dismantling a wheel in a workshop located on the airfield near Gate Three, said airport spokeswoman Deanne Thompson.

"It's a huge pressure," she said about the jet bridge tire, which was four feet tall.

Jet bridges are closed gangways that passengers and crew use to get from the terminal to the jet and vice versa.

Two men were working in the immediate vicinity.

"They were disassembling it, and it exploded and that force caused all the damage," said Thompson.

Thompson said the men worked for JBG, a company that also handles baggage handling equipment.

The second man refused medical attention.

No airport operation has been affected, she said.
