These 12 teams combined to rank 82-71 last year, including the top 10 in Oklahoma and LSU.

Posted on August 20, 2019

What is this buzz heard by Longhorns fans this month? Bees? Construction?

The Texas football team?

The Longhorns, along with a lot of hype, are entering their third season under head coach Tom Herman. Texas has just finished its first season of 10 wins since 2009. The Longhorns beat Georgia 28-21 at the Sugar Bowl and placed ninth in the last Associated Press poll.

Texas should aim for a Big 12 title this season, quarterback Sam Ehlinger is legitimately a candidate for the Heisman Trophy, and another season of 10 wins does not seem out of the question.

The opponents of Texas in 2019, however, beat 82-71 last year.

Here's an overview of what's waiting for us on the calendar:

August 31: Louisiana Tech

7 pm, Royal Memorial Stadium, Longhorn Network

The good news for Texas is that Maryland is opening its season against Howard. Stunned by the mediocre teams of Terrapins in the last two opening games, the Longhorns need a better start this year. Texas is 12-3 in its last 15 openings, including 12-1 at home.

Louisiana Tech, who is part of the American Conference, returns with eleven starters of a team of eight victories that ranked 39th in the national (23.0 points per game) but 96th in the attack (24.7 points per game).

If you are looking for a play for the opening game, this confrontation will include some. While she was addressing a crowd of Louisiana Tech fans earlier this year, Terry Bradshaw, a former Bulldogs club member, said that the Texas "Ehlinger" is not that bad. good. Ehlinger responded apathetically, but the junior quarterback's game could speak volumes.

Texas will be a big favorite in their first meeting with Louisiana Tech, but it may be wise for the degenerates to take the points. Two years ago, Louisiana Tech dropped the decision of one point in South Carolina. LSU beat the Bulldogs 38-21 in 2018, but Louisiana Tech took three points clear of the gap with 12:57 left in the fourth quarter.

September 7: LSU

6:30 pm, Royal Memorial Stadium, ABC

Barring an unexpected surprise on the first weekend of the season, LSU will host Georgia Southern, which could be one of the most popular tickets of the season.

In the USman-Statesman pre-season poll, LSU and Texas were ranked sixth and ninth, respectively. Since Texas defeated LSU at the Cotton Bowl in 2002, the Tigers have won 4-0 against the Big 12s. Texas has divided its last four games against SEC schools, but its last two seasons have ended a victory against Georgia and Missouri.

LSU hosts 16 starters, including quarterback Joe Burrow, who started for 2,894 yards. In another universe, Herman could coach Burrow. Texas fans will remember Herman having flirted with LSU before being hired in Texas in 2016. Herman also recruited Burrow to play in the state of Ohio while he was the Buckeyes offensive coordinator (Burrow left the state of Ohio after the 2017 season as a graduate).

September 14: Rice

7 pm, NRG Stadium (Houston), CBS Sports Network

The last update before the start of the game Big 12. This is the first time that Texas has played at NRG Stadium since the end of the first season of Herman with a 33-16 victory over Missouri in the Texas Bowl.

Rice, two years after the start of the Mike Bloomgren era, is trying to improve her balance sheet from 2-11 last year. It will not be easy, though. The Owls open the season with six consecutive teams that won bowling last year: Army, Wake Forest, Texas, Baylor, Louisiana Tech and Alabama-Birmingham.

Offensively, the Owls have lost their top two strikers and must break another quarter. The team returns six starters to a defense that awarded 36.0 points per game.

September 21: State of Oklahoma

As for the orange, the gloss has been mostly burned in the last decade.

Last year's Oklahoma State win of 38-35 at Stillwater was his fourth straight win in this series. The Longhorns have not beaten the Cowboys in Austin since 2008.

Either young rookie Spencer Sanders, a four-star prospect from Denton, or Dru Brown, the former starter from Hawaii, will lead the team's 13th offense last year (38.4 points per game). The new quarterback will inherit two weapons in running back Chuba Hubbard and wide receiver Tylan Wallace. Both made the preparatory team for the Big 12.

Texas is the fourth game of the Oklahoma State calendar, but its first test. The first three games are against McNeese State, Oregon State and Tulsa FCS (5-19) last year.

October 5: West Virginia

Last year's clash between these two schools sparked a controversy (Horns Down, who?) And a conversion to the last second of 2 points that allowed West Virginia to win a victory 42-41. Montagnards, however, should take a step back this fall. Why? Their coach, quarterback, top four forwards, best offensive lineman, best tackle and half-defender for the entire conference all left the other season.

New coach Neal Brown has halfback Kennedy McKoy, who has racked up 149 yards of offense against Texas last year. Martell Pettaway, who burned UT for 121 rushing yards and two touchdowns, is also back. And quarterback Austin Kendall is another possible weapon after his transfer from Oklahoma.

Texas will travel to Morgantown after his first break of the season. In his coaching career, Herman is 3-1 in games following a bye.

October 12: Oklahoma

11 am, Cotton Bowl (Dallas), Fox

Will the history of UT's season include one or two chapters on Sooners? Texas beat Oklahoma in the Red River rivalry during last year's regular season, but the Sooners took their revenge in the Big 12 championship game. This year, the Sooners and Longhorns have were chosen first and second in the Big 12 pre-survey.

UT's defensive coordinator, Todd Orlando, has had to prepare Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, Heisman Trophy winners, over the past two years. Will Alabama transfer Jalen Hurts in third? The Longhorns will also be worried about the return of two 900-yard riders to Kennedy Brooks and Trey Sermon. And then there is the dynamic wide receiver CeeDee Lamb and the tight partner of all the conferences, Grant Calcaterra. The Sooners averaged 48.4 points per game last season, the best in the country.

This match could feature the Big 12's best offensive and defensive talents. Ehlinger, who has 11 touchdowns in three career games against OU, is the Big 12 offensive player of the year. Linebacker Kenneth Murray of Oklahoma was the best advocate of the conference.

October 19: Kansas

Royal-Memorial Stadium, time / TV to be determined

The countdown to the basketball season will probably have begun in Lawrence by mid-October, but that does not mean there is no reason to pay attention to Kansas football. The Jayhawks have not broken a record since 2008, but offensive midfielder Pooka Williams Jr. is back from his rookie debut for the first year. Kyle Thompson is the bettor for the Big 12 Prep Team.

Oh, and here are Miles.

Almost three years after leaving LSU, Miles is back on the sidelines. And he had already turned around a Big 12 team: Oklahoma State won only six games, from 1989 to 2000, but Miles achieved this feat three times between 2001 and 2004 – and he sees similarities in his most recent project. "I think (Kansas is) ready to put a quality team on the ground, and I think there will be some similarities in this Oklahoma state experience," she said. he said at the Big 12 Media Day.

The hiring of miles by Kansas has cost a fan to Longhorns. This summer, former swimmer UT Smacker Miles told the American man that she had to fight for her father during the Texas-KU match. "My blood, my sweat and my tears are in this Texas pool, but my heart is on the ground for Kansas," said Miles, whose two brothers also moved to Kansas this season.

Texas finally defeated the TCU last year as their home win of 31- 16 turned into a four-game losing streak against Horned Frogs. A season later, we'll see if the Longhorns can be as successful in Fort Worth. Texas not only lost its last two games at the TCU, but lost by a combined score of 74-14.

The Texas side team should be put to the test, but again, it remains to be determined who will be issuing passes to Jalen Reagor. During the 12 media days in July, TCU coach Gary Patterson was still in the midst of making six quarters. Texas saw two of those shifts last season: Mike Collins, a junior at the TCU, and Alex Delton, who was a graduate, who was a Kansas City graduate.

TCU placed two defensemen – lineman Corey Bethley and cornerback Jeff Gladney – in the Big 12 qualifying squad. The Horned Frogs ranked first or second in the Big 12 defending by scoring in three of the five last years; Last season, Texas was among the six teams that scored more points, which is higher than the 23.1 points awarded by TCU.

November 9: Kansas State

Royal-Memorial Stadium, time / TV to be determined

Kansas State long-time coach Bill Snyder has retired and the Wildcats program is now led by Chris Klieman, who has just won a successful pass in the state of North Dakota with four FCS titles. five years. He won 1-0 against Big 12, while his Bison defeated Iowa State in 2014.

Klieman has an experienced quarterback (Skylar Thompson) and a defensive defense team (Reggie Walker) to work with. But it starts from scratch. The main recipient of Kansas State's last year is now Mississippi State. Thompson is the only player in the lineup to win a rushing yard in 2018.

After a 5-7 record last season, Kansas State was chosen to rank ninth in the Big 12 presidential poll.

November 16: at Iowa State

In 2016, just before Matt Campbell's first season in the state of Iowa, the Cyclones were ranked ninth in the Big 12 round robin. This year, the Cyclones were chosen to finish third. But the media's opinion about the program is not the only third party to have changed to Ames. I think one of the greatest things that was known when I first arrived in the state of Iowa was to find out what colors wore the uniforms. what is your song of entry? "Campbell told Big 12 days of media." People care about things that really do not matter, and now we're talking about a football team, we're asking about football and we worry about what's really important. "

A defense that has allocated 22.9 points per game, the best mark of the conference, will be eagerly awaited. Defensive linemen JaQuan Bailey and Ray Lima, linebacker Marcel Spears Jr. and defensive back Greg Eisworth were all selected to be part of the Big 12 prep team.

The state of Iowa, which went 8-5 last year, lost its top scorer and receiver to the NFL. Quarterback Sophomore Brock Purdy is back after 2250 yards and 16 touchdowns in his eight starts. The worst of these was his performance of 10 for 23, 130 yards against Texas.

November 23rd: at Baylor

McLane Stadium (Waco), hour / TV coming soon

A match of the last two winners of the Texas Bowl. The Longhorns will be looking to extend their winning streak on the Bears after four wins, but three of the last four meetings have been decided at seven points or less, so you have to wait for the drama at Waco.

After a first season of Matt Rhule in 2017, the Bears improved to 7-6 in 2018. Defensive lineman James Lynch and linebacker Clay Johnston will be the mainstay of the defense. And third-year quarterback Charlie Brewer has the luxury of offering one of the best conference receivers in Denzel Mims. Baylor won Texas the week after his arrival in Oklahoma, so the two-game game could tell us how far the Bears have come.

In last year's 23-17 win in Austin, Ehlinger was injured in the opening game. He also ruined a quarterback scenario between Westlake and Lake Travis between Ehlinger and Brewer. An injury also escaped him in the 2017 match as well as during the last meeting between Ehlinger Westlake and Brewer's Lake Travis in high school.

November 29: Texas Tech

11 am, Royal Memorial Stadium, Fox / Fox Sports 1

After the last Thanksgiving at Lawrence, the Longhorns will be spending the holidays in Austin. The Red Raiders will be going to Black Friday as part of Texas Tech coach Matt Wells' new introduction. Wells, hired last November to replace Kliff Kingsbury, has spent the last six years in the state of Utah. He was the boss of Orlando from 2013-14.

Only 15 teams scored more goals than Texas Tech last year. One of them, however, was the state of Utah (47.5 points per game). The Red Raiders average 37.3 points per game and the two best passers of the school – Alan Bowman and Jett Duffey – are back. (Duffey was also Texas Tech's main running back). Bowman racked up 605 yards in a game against Houston, but his freshman season was cut short by a partially collapsed lung in a 51-46 loss to Oklahoma.

For the ninth season in a row, Texas Tech has allocated more than 30 points per game. Cornerback Adrian Frye is one of the defense returnees.
