A two-year-old dies after falling from the freedom of the sea

A two-year-old child would have died today after falling off deck 11 while the Royal Caribbean cruise ship was at the port of San Juan.

The vessel was moored at Pan American Wharf II in San Juan.

There is conflicting information about the circumstances of the tragedy. One source (translated) indicates that the child "took a look through one of the open and fallen windows", and another newspaper reports that the "child" was in the arm of his grandfather who slipped and fell ".

The San Juan police reportedly opened an investigation into the accident.

There have been relatively few situations where infants have fallen from upper decks onto cruise ships. In 2012, a 14-month-old toddler fell from Deck 12 to Deck 11 of the ship. Monarch of the seas and was injured. The vessel turned around and returned to Port Canaveral, Florida, where the child received emergency medical care and recovered.

Update: According to the family, the child was one and a half years old and would have had his second birthday in December.
