A student in Southern California was stabbed on campus while he was walking his dog Sunday night, according to school officials.

The victim, who was not named, was taken to hospital in a stable state, Vasich said.

The attacker escaped, said Vasich, and the UCI police sent an SMS and an e-mail to the entire campus inviting students to stay in place. After a search, the authorities estimated that the suspect had left the campus and that the order of shelters on the spot had been lifted, said Vasich.

"We have increased patrols in and around Camino del Sol apartments and will increase the availability of security escorts for the next few days," said UCI Public Security.
