It is not known how many people were on the plane. According to the Navy, an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter typically operates with a crew of four.

“An MH-60S helicopter aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) crashed in the sea while performing routine flight operations approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of San Diego at 4:30 PM PST , Aug. 31, “the 3rd Navy Fleet said in the statement.

Several Coast Guard and Navy assets are used in ongoing search operations, the Navy said.
