A A new poll found that a majority of Americans from all demographic groups surveyed support the so-called "red flag" laws.
The laws, also known as Extreme Risk Protection Orders, allow family members or the police to apply for a court order to temporarily take the firearms of a suspected individual. to pose a threat to themselves or others. The APM Research Lab survey found that more than three quarters of Americans support family-generated ERPOs, while 70% support police-created ERPOs.
Among the Republicans, 70% support family-initiated ERPOs and 66%, the orders are initiated by the police. Of Democrats, 85% and 78% support family-initiated and police-initiated ERPOs, respectively.
The survey was conducted just before the mass shootings in El Paso (Texas) and Dayton (Ohio), which killed 31 people in total. About 1,000 people were interviewed with an overall error margin of 3.4%.
Following the shooting, President Trump announced his support for the "Red Flag Laws".
"We need to ensure that people who are deemed to pose a serious risk to public safety do not have access to firearms, and if they do, they can be used quickly and properly.
