HEMPSTEAD –

A video of the Hofstra University fraternity was suspended on a video allegedly showing students forcing a dog to drink beer in a barrel.

The video of about five seconds seems to show someone at a party in the garden picking up a dog and putting a beer dispenser in his mouth. Nassau County SPCA investigators say the video is disturbing, cruel and unacceptable.

"This dog had no choice – he did not say," Hey, I want a beer and I want it to flow down my throat, "" says Gary Rogers, of the Nassau SPCA. "So, it's wrong at all levels."

Investigators say that the owner of the dog, who appears in the video, is a 21-year-old elder from Hofstra, a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity.

An SPCA investigator went to the fraternity house to check on the welfare of the dog, a Cavalier King Charles aged about 10 months. They say that their dog was in the fraternity, that he is healthy and clean, that he has food and water and that he is in a good environment.

The University Hofstra says that the chapter of the fraternity is suspended while the incident is the subject of an investigation. A sibling spokesman said that they had ordered the cessation of all fraternity activities and that they hoped to use the incident as a "teaching moment" for its members.

Some neighbors of the fraternity say they are tired of its members.

"It's all they do – drink, play football," says Walter Szpaczynsky. "I can not stand it anymore."

SPCA investigators ordered members of the fraternity to take the dog to a vet on Monday for blood tests and other examinations. Once all the evidence has been gathered, the SPCA and the prosecutor will decide whether or not criminal charges will be laid.
