TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – A Washburn football player was killed in a shootout in the center of Topeka, which also injured a former player, according to Washburn University.
Washburn confirmed that 23-year-old junior Dwane Simmons had been killed, while former player Corey Ballentine was injured.
Ballentine, 23, has sustained life-threatening injuries, said Topeka police. The former Ichabod, which had been drafted by the New York Giants a few hours earlier, is expected to recover completely, the university added.

Investigators said the officers reacted to the 1400 block of 13th Street at around 12:45 pm after reports of firearms being fired. Grant Stephens of 13 NEWS, an on-site officer, testified that Simmons died in the street as a result of a gunshot wound.
Later Sunday morning they confirmed that there was a second bullet victim, Ballentine.
