Stephanie Lay said she found the stacks of letters from the insurance company hidden in her mailbox between Thursday and Monday.
"A week ago, Thursday was the first wave of letters and I received 46 letters," she told CNN. "I immediately called United Healthcare Insurance to tell them that I had received 46 letters of the same letter."
And the letters did not stop arriving, piling up more than 500 by Monday.
The letters related to a health care claim of $ 54 or $ 0 which, according to United Healthcare, is not covered, said Lay.
When she asked United Healthcare why she was getting a mountain of letters, she was told that it was a coding problem, she said.
In a statement, United Healthcare told CNN that she was working on the resolution of the problem but that she could not provide any details because of the confidentiality requirements.
"We have determined the cause of the problem, we are sorry that this happened and we contacted the family to discuss the situation with them," said the health insurer.
Lay says the letters all have a message at the bottom of the screen inviting people to use paperless paper. "I think they had to cut down half of a forest just to send that," she said.
