A woman was flown to a hospital after being bitten by an alligator in Florida, according to Brevard County Fire and Rescue Services.

According to the department, the woman suffered "serious bites" and was bitten on her leg and side. The attack took place near Fay Lake Wilderness Park, about 20 miles from Cape Canaveral.

The ministry said it would not disclose the woman's identity because of patient privacy laws, and referred any inquiries to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. CNN requested the comments of the commission.

On its website, the FWC warns people not to feed gators and swim only in designated areas during the day.

Alligator attacks on humans are rare but not unknown in the South, especially in hot weather.

Last August, a woman was killed in an alligator attack on the island of Hilton Head, South Carolina. Just two months ago, a Florida woman walking her dogs had been dragged into the water and killed by an alligator.

In June 2016, during a highly publicized attack, a 2 year old boy died after an alligator drove him into a lagoon near a Walt Disney World hotel.
