A white YouTube leader, who suffered a hostile social media reaction after calling police on a black man outside his California residential building, issued a statement Tuesday in which he apologized and was trying to explain his actions.
In a now viral video, Christopher Cukor is calling the San Francisco police about a man later identified as Wesley Michael, 35, who was waiting for his friend in front of the building on the 4th July. One can hear Cukor on the phone talking to agents of an "intruder", while his young son begged him in the background to stop.
"I agree with him," the boy said. "Dad, I do not like that, let's go."
Cukor has since issued a lengthy statement on Medium regarding the incident, in which he claimed that Michel was entering the building without using his calling box, which had prompted Cukor to wonder where he was going.
"I want to be clear on this point, it's something I do regularly, regardless of the identity of the other person," Cukor said. He went on to explain that Michel's friend, identified in the video as Cathy, apparently did not expect him, and that the situation between Michel and Cukor had "become conflictual".
In the video, one can hear Michel, a former computer engineer from Facebook according to his social network, telling Cukor: "Listen to your son" and warning him: "You'll be the next person on TV."

Cukor went on to say that he was too cautious because of a tragic event in his family.
"My father was murdered in front of his home by an intruder whom he faced alone," wrote Cukor. "For the safety of my child, the building and the building, I thought it was necessary to ask for help in this situation, and I met intruders in my building and we have been stolen many times, San Francisco is not uncommon and bad actors are all colors. "

Cukor, however, acknowledged what he said was the frequency of police calls to black men who do not commit crimes and apologies for contributing to this story.
"Unfortunately, many people call the authorities against people of color for no reason other than their race," he said. "The last thing I thought was to echo this story – and I'm sorry that my actions allowed Wesly to feel unjustly targeted because of his race."
At the end of the video, a friend of Michel meets him at the entrance of the building.
In his message, Cukor stated that he believed that people were "good at heart" but could be affected by a traumatic past.

"It is our past experiences and our fears that even darken our best intentions," he said. "I hope Wesly will read this and understand my story as I tried to understand his."
