CLEVELAND, Ohio – Right-hander Aaron Civale was back on a major league mound Tuesday afternoon for the first time since June 21 at Wrigley Field.
It wasn’t to start a game and fill a hole in the rotation, two things the Indians need, but it was another step on the way to maybe doing those two things this season.
What Civale did was start a play mound reliever box session at Progressive Field. Usually a reliever box session is started where you would expect it to be started – in the reliever box.
“He made his enclosure on the stadium mound here,” interim manager DeMarlo Hale said ahead of Wednesday’s game against the A’s. “I think it’s a good progression in terms of the atmosphere and the environment around him. I thought its intensity was on the rise. Its volume was on the rise.
“I spoke to him today and he was really happy. I just thought it was pretty cool to see him over the hump at a major league stadium where he’ll end up going.
The Indians are hoping Civale can face batters in a mock game this weekend as he recovers from an outstretched middle finger to his right hand. It is not 100%, but there has been no setback.
A rehabilitation mission could follow after the mock match. The 10-game winner hasn’t pitched since injuring his finger on June 21 against the Cubs.
Shane Bieber, who hasn’t pitched since June 13 with a right shoulder injury, isn’t as far advanced as Civale. He continues to play wrestling, but has not yet started a bullpen session.
Right now, the Indians need a starter for Saturday’s game against the Tigers. They used an enclosure game, started by southpaw Sam Hentges, on Monday against the Reds to fill that spot in the rotation that previously belonged to JC Mejia.
N ° 1: the contract killers
Harold Ramirez hits 0.373 (22 for 59) with runners in scoring position. He’s tied for fourth in the major leagues with Toronto Triple Crown contender Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Amed Rosario, meanwhile, has 33 hits since the All-Star break, second in the AL behind Starling Marte of Oakland, who has 37. Rosario is hitting .410 (16 for 39) in August.
“I think he’s a hitter who uses all the court,” Hale said. “If you look at his cards, he hits the ball all over the field. He strikes in right field. He is able to strike behind runners. He’s got enough pop to put out a ball. Being at the top of the order, with its speed component, there is a threat to that.
“I think he used his speed. As proof, he has a few hits in the field. I would just like to see him continue to make contact. When he puts the bat on the ball, there are things that can happen with his speed and his ability to hit the ball all over the court.
Rosario leads the Indians with a batting average of 0.279 (109 for 391). He also leads the hits with 109 and the triples with five. Rosario is 12 for 12 in stolen goals, reaching 0.364 (24 for 66) in his last 16 games. That includes seven hits in his last 10 batting, including a triple, two doubles and three infield hits.

Following the transaction deadline for veterans Cesar Hernandez, Eddie Rosario and Jordan Luplow, the Indians have assessed several young players from their organization who will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft in December. They must decide by November whether they will be protected on the 40-player roster, traded, non-bid or exposed to the other 29 teams on the last day of the winter meetings.
It’s a year-round process.
“It’s a good problem to have a lot of people that we think we need to protect in the next rule 5 draft,” GM assistant Carter Hawkins said. “So we are excited about this challenge. But now we have a bit of headroom on our 40-player roster with some of the deals we made at the deadline. It gave us the opportunity to watch some of the guys like Francisco (Perez) and I hope it helps our decision making process move forward.
The Indians just selected Perez’s class AAA Columbus contract when Bobby Bradley was placed on the injured list.
There are currently 39 players on the Indian 40 player roster. Civale, Bieber and Josh Naylor, who are on the 60-day injured list, are not counting at this time. They will be in November, when the list of 40 people has been sent to the Commissioner’s office.
