FORT MYERS, Fla. – Four months have passed, but a New York Yankees player is still upset by a playoff loss that forced his team to retire earlier last fall.
"I'm not there yet," said Yankees center player Aaron Hicks on Saturday. "I can not believe it until we win."
Hicks made the comments in the middle of the Yankees opening game at the Boston Red Sox's JetBlue Park after being questioned about how long it took to overcome the defeat of the American League series.
Even though Saturday's match was an exhibition that featured only one of Boston's regular players – Rafael Devers – it was the first match between the two clubs since Boston's 4: 3 win in the Bronx in the fourth match of the ALDS of October.
A few weeks later, the Red Sox won their ninth world series.
"I want to win a world series," continued Hicks. "I'm tired of losing, we came so close, but I'm tired of saying we came near."
The seven-year veteran, whom Yankees coach Aaron Boone had called Saturday "perhaps the most underrated player in the game," participated in the second playoff season. Prior to last year 's loss to ALDS, Hicks was involved in defeating the 2017 Yankees AL Championship Series against Houston Astros, the future World Series champion.
Hicks is apparently not the only Yankee to enter this season motivated by post-season disappointments.
"We are a little more hungry," said sophomore sophomore Gleyber Torres.
Before being eliminated after three and a half innings during the spring training portion, Hicks scored a brace with a 1-2 and Torres started a deep circuit in the first inning to center.
The Red Sox ended up taking revenge, beating the Yankees 8-5.
