Aaron Rodgers knows precisely what Jordan Love has been going through this offseason, with the young flagger having to answer questions about a future over which he had little control.
Rodgers spent three years behind Brett Favre to start his career after being drafted in the first round. His career began with a Farve unhappy with his future at Green Bay, then eventually came back and sent Rodgers back to the bench.
So this offseason, knowing what his disagreement with the Packers’ organization would mean for Love, Rodgers kept the second-year QB updated throughout the process.
“And then I just reached out; I reached out a number of times [to] check on him [and] see how he’s doing, ”Rodgers said Wednesday, via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. “I didn’t hide anything from him. I let him know where I was mentally and what I was thinking. And I hope he enjoyed it.
“I just felt that was what I wanted in this situation, just to hear from the guy. And also, there is a love, an appreciation and a friendship there, just like it was with me and Brett. So I wanted to make sure I checked him out and let him know I was thinking of him. “
Knowing the pressure Love would be feeling, Rodgers wanted to make sure the young QB didn’t think his problem with the organization was personal to Love.
“I have a lot of respect and love for Jordan, and I understand what he’s been through must be tough,” Rodgers said. “I lived it for two years in the offseason, in ’06 and ’07, I was the guy the whole offseason, going through quarterback school, going through most of the OTAs, in taking all the reps, then here’s Favrey coming back – and obviously I’m back on the bench. Luckily I’ve been there, and I can figure out what he’s going through a little bit, so I’m just trying to keep that in there. ‘mind all the time. “
While Favre said it was not in his contract with Tutor Rodgers, the latter took over that mantle of mentoring regarding Love. Keeping the young QB updated and making sure he didn’t feel like Rodgers was mad at him for being on the roster was part of that teaching. Of course, it helped Rodgers to know that whenever he returned, Love wasn’t a threat to take his job at this point.
