Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers on Tuesday addressed the comments he made on Sunday following a loss in the NFC Championship game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, downplaying his uncertain future with the team.
Rodgers said after the game, “The future of a lot of guys, they’re uncertain, including me.” Sure The Pat McAfee Show, he said, “I don’t feel like I said anything that I haven’t said before.”
“It was more of a realization, I think, that at the end of the day my future is not necessarily in my control,” he said. “… I don’t think there is a reason I wouldn’t be back. But there aren’t many absolutes, as you know, in this business.”
Rodgers sentiment reflected how Corey Linsley, Aaron Jones, Robert Tonyan, Jamaal Williams and Allen Lazard will be free agents this offseason. Green Bay’s offense could be very different at the start of the 2021 season.
However, Rodgers also appeared to point out how his dynamic with the team changed as the Packers progressed into the first round of the 2020 Draft to select quarterback Jordan Love. Unlike other flaggers in his age bracket, Rodgers, 37, gave no indication that he intended to retire anytime soon.
The franchise could have just proactively set up a succession plan, but some request if head coach Matt LaFleur was trying to go in a different strategic direction.
LaFleur Sunday make it clear he wants Rodgers to come back. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the nine-time Pro Bowler would love a new contract, which indicates he continues to see a way forward with Green Bay.
