Tavon Austin was the Rams’ 8th overall pick in 2013. He’s never lived up to that draft status with the team, spending the first five seasons of his career with the organization between St. Louis and Los Angeles.

But after signing with the Packers this week, Austin’s new quarterback believes the wide receiver might have had a different career path, if only the timing had been different. What Austin does well – reaction sweeps in particular – just wasn’t as hot in 2013 as it was in 2020.

“I think this offense had really been [at the start of his career], I think he really would have found a sticking point for a long time, being a guy who can do so much, ”said Aaron Rodgers, via Jason Wilde of Wisconsin State Journal. “Give him sweeps and let him in [play-]action stuff, putting it on the edge. It’s good to have it.

Austin stepped into that kind of niche role in 2017 – his final year with the Rams and the team’s first under head coach Sean McVay. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was also on that coaching staff as offensive coordinator. Austin has spent the last two seasons with the Cowboys, scoring 195 yards in 2018 and 224 in 2019.

Signing with a team this late in the season likely means Austin won’t have a big role in the Green Bay offense. But for a team vying for a title, every offensive weapon can help.
