Aaron Rodgers saw a lot of Zach Wilson when the Green Bay Packers had joint practices with the New York Jets last week. Rodgers didn’t play in the teams’ pre-season game, but wasn’t surprised Wilson played as well as he did.
The way Rodgers sees it – the Jets have a franchise quarterback.
“He’s a good young boy, he’s got a good temper,” Rodgers said, via Yahoo! Sports. “This kid can throw the heck out of that ball and it was a good shot on the straight sideline at the end of the first. I’m so excited for what he can do in this league.”
Wilson finished 9 of 11 for 128 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s game, finishing with a 154.7 passer rating. Among players with more than 20 passing attempts, Wilson leads all quarterbacks in the league in assists (137.7). The Jets took Wilson with the No.2 overall pick and were more than impressed with how he developed in training camp.
Rodgers even took the time to help Wilson during joint practices, which isn’t uncommon for a veteran quarterback to do for a young caller – although that says a lot about Wilson’s potential and at what point Rodgers thinks of him.
“The most important thing I learned was a two minute exercise, how calm and collected he is,” Wilson said of Rodgers last week. “He’s kinda over there, almost like he’s just messing around, playing football in the backyard, he’s having a good time and he makes it work. It’s cool to ask him about the game. legs, what’s going on on the pitch, what he’s seeing. If I could spend more time with him and keep asking questions, I would. “
Wilson admired Rodgers growing up, calling him his favorite player. There are certainly similarities between Wilson’s play and Rodgers’ play – which is no coincidence.
“He’s always been someone I definitely modeled my game on,” Wilson said. “I always tried to copy what he did, because he’s been doing it for so long. He’s just a fun player to watch and he plays the game the right way.
“There aren’t a lot of guys, I would say, in the league who can do what he’s doing out there.”
