ABC News chairman calls for independent investigation into sexual assault allegations

ABC News president Kim Godwin told staff on a conference call Thursday that she had called for an independent investigation into how the network handled the sexual assault allegations against the former executive producer of “Good Morning America”.

The comments came a day after a complaint was filed alleging producer Michael Corn sexually assaulted a current ABC News staff member and a former staff member in separate incidents. Mr Corn has denied any wrongdoing and called the allegations fabrications, citing collegial email exchanges with the two women shortly after the incidents allegedly took place. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday.

“We cannot allow ourselves to be investigated. We need an independent person, ”Ms. Godwin said, according to a recording of the conference call. “The process must be independent.

The lawsuit also named ABC as the defendant, claiming the company had failed to respond adequately to Mr Corn’s alleged misconduct complaints from several women.

During the call, Ms Godwin said ABC News staff members involved in handling complaints against Mr Corn would be given due process, but their role would be reviewed.
